Most reasonable people are simply tired of politics. In 2023, politics is a sure fire way to have the dinner dishes bounced off the wall and long time friends no longer speaking.
I have a difficult time understanding what today’s Republicans actually want to happen. As I understand it, if you are a Republican today, you want to eliminate or reduce:
- Social Security
- Medicare
- Medicaid
- Public Funding for Art
- Labor Unions
- Public Funding for Health Care
- Immigration
- Gays, Lesbians and anyone else not “normal”
Of course if all of that is eliminated, we are really no different than Russia or Belarus or China. So, for the average Joe Republican, I’m not sure if they are actually on board with all of that, or if they are just cheering for one side over the other with no real understanding of what is happening in America.
We’ve let the media tell us what we should think. We have allowed ourselves to be governed by a bunch of billionaires who are really just trying to add to their pile of gold in the vault, and we have become blind to the fact that nearly all politicians are in it for themselves and could give a rats’s ass about the average American.
Do we really want to go back to the “golden” days of the 1890’s? Where most working folks died in their 40’s? Where you only got health care if you paid cash up front? Where you owned a house …oh, never mind, you didn’t. Where the oligarchs had so much money than the rest of us that it was simply unimaginable? Kind of like today, where it is easier for Donald Trump to walk down the sidewalk dropping $100 bills every 10 feet and it just cost more to stop and pick them up than to keep going.
What happened to the meaning of what is on the bottom of the Statue of Liberty? I guarantee you that if you are not 100% Native American, your family were immigrants, and chances are they didn’t have passports or visas. They came looking for the promise of a better life, and their Republican party descendants are now wanting to slam that door shut and I can’t figure out why.
Immigrants take the jobs that you simply don’t want. Meat-packing plant. Maid in a hotel. Dishwasher at the diner. Picking vegetables under the broiling sun. Landscaping grunt work. Think of a terrible nasty miserable job, and there is an immigrant standing in line waiting for it because even though it is terrible and nasty it is still better than what they left behind. It’s the jobs your great-great-grandfathers took on when they first got here.
Now we have people like Ron DeSantis actively trying to change history and modify the way our kids are educated so that all the things we did wrong are swept under the rug. They are going after YOUR kids and BRAINWASHING them and you are sitting there cheering them on and it simply baffles me.
We are allowing gerry-mandered state legislators to make it harder and harder for you to vote. The vote is what made us different.
We have allowed our elderly and selfish politicians to stack the Supreme Court, the last government body that was trusted to be non-partisan. We are doomed.
I grew up thinking America was invincible, but it turns out that we aren’t any better than any third rate country that lets the bullies take over. Our bank vaults will be emptied, we will have our life made more and more miserable while the upper 1% keeps enriching themselves on our backs.
Why are we doing this to ourselves?
